Debate about sexualisation in music videos

During Lauras session, we looked into the top 10 sexiest music videos and discussed why and how people are being sexualised in the videos and on some occasions the lyrics itself. Pretty much all the videos we looked at involved the woman wearing little clothing and dancing in a seductive way. In the Christina Aguilara video in some scenes she was dressed as a builder and doing construction, this is typically a mans job, so they’re trying to change the image of her and make it more sexual by showing her doing something that men typically work as.

A large majority of the videos were giving off the impression that men were in control of woman and were dominating them, for example in “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke, Robin is whispering in girls ears and dancing up against them while they are barely clothed in some parts of the video. A lot of people think these sexualised videos are wrong and should not be made since it gives a bad impression to young people, which I have to agree with myself, but then again these type of videos are what is making their song so well known and making them money.

An artist who is known to do types of videos like this recently is Miley Cyrus, this was a shock to many since she was typically known as a cute, young girl who played “Hannah Montanna” in the Disney show. She then broke into the music industry and made sexualised videos, one example is the video “wrecking ball” this video shows Miley riding on a wrecking ball naked, everyone was completely shocked by this video because they were used to the “Hannah Montanna” Miley. During this video she also licks a sledgehammer, this gives off more seductive actions. In an interview Miley said that the video “wrecking ball” was inspired by Sinead O’connor’s video “Nothing compares to you”, Sinead took huge offence to this since “wrecking ball” is nothing like that video other than the close up of Miley singing. Sinead then went on to write a letter:

Dear Miley,

I wasn’t going to write this letter, but today i’ve been dodging phone calls from various newspapers who wished me to remark upon your having said in Rolling Stone your Wrecking Ball video was designed to be similar to the one for Nothing Compares … So this is what I need to say … And it is said in the spirit of motherliness and with love.

I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether its the music business or yourself doing the pimping.

Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent.
I am happy to hear I am somewhat of a role model for you and I hope that because of that you will pay close attention to what I am telling you.

The music business doesn’t give a shit about you, or any of us. They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think its what YOU wanted … and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, ‘they’ will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone.

None of the men ogling you give a shit about you either, do not be fooled. Many’s the woman mistook lust for love. If they want you sexually that doesn’t mean they give a fuck about you. All the more true when you unwittingly give the impression you don’t give much of a fuck about yourself. And when you employ people who give the impression they don’t give much of a fuck about you either. No one who cares about you could support your being pimped … and that includes you yourself.

Yes, I’m suggesting you don’t care for yourself. That has to change. You ought be protected as a precious young lady by anyone in your employ and anyone around you, including you. This is a dangerous world. We don’t encourage our daughters to walk around naked in it because it makes them prey for animals and less than animals, a distressing majority of whom work in the music industry and it’s associated media.

You are worth more than your body or your sexual appeal. The world of showbiz doesn’t see things that way, they like things to be seen the other way, whether they are magazines who want you on their cover, or whatever … Don’t be under any illusions … ALL of them want you because they’re making money off your youth and your beauty … which they could not do except for the fact your youth makes you blind to the evils of show business. If you have an innocent heart you can’t recognise those who do not.

I repeat, you have enough talent that you don’t need to let the music business make a prostitute of you. You shouldn’t let them make a fool of you either. Don’t think for a moment that any of them give a flying fuck about you. They’re there for the money… we’re there for the music. It has always been that way and it will always be that way. The sooner a young lady gets to know that, the sooner she can be REALLY in control.

You also said in Rolling Stone that your look is based on mine. The look I chose, I chose on purpose at a time when my record company were encouraging me to do what you have done. I felt I would rather be judged on my talent and not my looks. I am happy that I made that choice, not least because I do not find myself on the proverbial rag heap now that I am almost 47 yrs of age … which unfortunately many female artists who have based their image around their sexuality, end up on when they reach middle age.

Real empowerment of yourself as a woman would be to in future refuse to exploit your body or your sexuality in order for men to make money from you. I needn’t even ask the question … I’ve been in the business long enough to know that men are making more money than you are from you getting naked. Its really not at all cool. And its sending dangerous signals to other young women. Please in future say no when you are asked to prostitute yourself. Your body is for you and your boyfriend. It isn’t for every spunk-spewing dirtbag on the net, or every greedy record company executive to buy his mistresses diamonds with.

As for the shedding of the Hannah Montana image … whoever is telling you getting naked is the way to do that does absolutely NOT respect your talent, or you as a young lady. Your records are good enough for you not to need any shedding of Hannah Montana. She’s waaaaaaay gone by now … Not because you got naked but because you make great records.

Whether we like it or not, us females in the industry are role models and as such we have to be extremely careful what messages we send to other women. The message you keep sending is that its somehow cool to be prostituted … its so not cool Miley … its dangerous. Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. We aren’t merely objects of desire. I would be encouraging you to send healthier messages to your peers … that they and you are worth more than what is currently going on in your career. Kindly fire any motherfucker who hasn’t expressed alarm, because they don’t care about you.”

This shows Sinead telling Miley that the image she is giving off is a bad impression to the younger people and almost ruining her lyrics that she is singing.

Reception Theory

The purpose of our production is to give students in college a voice. We want to give students a chance discuss the issues within the college and aim to resolve their issues . We think this’ll be more effective since it shows a visual of the students problems rather than just a piece of paper like usual. The show will hopefully make members of staff realise that the students have problems and that they want them solved. We are hoping that this show is going to be a continuous thing, maybe to be shown once a month depending on when we have the time to produce the show. We are hoping that this is going to make students come along and have the confidence to speak there mind about the problems they have with the college, then hopefully this information will be fed back through a production to the members off staff, so they can see clearly what issues need to be resolved.

Media Audiences- Task 4

Doctor Who

Doctor who has 4 different genres included in it, these are : Action, Drama, Sci-Fi and Adventure. This ensures that the product is delivered to a wide audience since people enjoy different genres, and this includes many. People make seek out these certain genres, depending on what they live their life like, for example, someone who is emotional and can get emotionally attached to characters easily, will watch Doctor Who because of the Drama and emotion shown in the program. Doctor Who can be both informal and formal in tone, some episodes are very sad and aim out to hit the audiences heart, others are light hearted with a comedic effect, the show has a good mix of both; once again delivering to a wide range of audience. Positive aspects of the show is that it delivers to a wide range of audience, and it is a unique program so anybody can watch it. On the downside of it, all episodes may not include a certain genre, so depending on the episode depends on what type of audience watch it, but it’s usually pretty good all round.

The Walking Dead

The walking dead has a range of different genres, which allows a large audience base, the main genres in the show are: Thriller, Drama and Horror. This is a very nice mix of genres and can speak out to the audience in many different ways, if the audience like suspense and a good story line, these genres are perfect and most people like the unexpected so that is another reason it reaches out to a large group, I think it is mainly aimed at older teens and young adults, because of the horror genre. The walking dead is mainly a formal show, since it can have very serious parts in show great emotion, this is so the audience get attached to the characters. A positive aspect about this show is that it aims to a large young audience but it doesn’t really aim to impress any of the older people.

The Graham Norton Show

The Graham Norton show has one genre and that is a Talk Show, this will be mainly aimed at the older generation but can also be watched by younger people, since they discuss popular cultural things happening with a comedic effect. The show is both informal and formal, since the topics they come across are formal and aim to be in a formal tone, but the way they discuss in a comedic effect is informal, this adds a light hearted view to the show. One positive thing about the Graham Norton show, is that it is not taken to seriously and can make the audience laugh. One thing that lets it down is that because it is only 1 genre it reaches out to a smaller audience than other programmes.

Uses and Gratifications Theory

For our multi-camera production, the target audience of this show really would depending on what is being discussed each week for example if we are discussing an issue to do with college, it’ll mainly attract group E which are students, pensioners and the unemployed these are most likely to be watching this show, Group D; manual workers and Group C1 & 2; Nurses, Office workers, Plumbers, Carpenters and electricians are also going to watch this show since issues may arise that effects them. Both male and Female would be our target audience because both genders will be effected from a large majority of issues that are being discussed.

Music Video Analysis

Our groups Music Video Analysis

Thomas Vaux

Black Metal;

Behemoth – Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel

Cradle Of Filth – Her Ghost in The Fog

Immortal – All Shall Fall

The story behind all of these videos are disturbing, horrific, demonic, gruesome and just weird. The narrative behind these videos is normally sacrifice and anti christian. These videos are all in Black and white, giving the effects of being dark and creepy. The black and white coloured theme really goes well with the music genre. There always seems to be a innocent person, mainly a young girl involved. The mise en scene is always in a dark wood or a castle/ abandoned building. The artists/characters always seem to be in black leather or just black clothing, long black hair, black instruments  and have face paint on, mostly likely black and white. The editing when making this video would depend on the mood of the video and music being…
